Sober documentary about the first few months
in power of Francois Hollande. Nice to get an
idea of how things function inside L’Élysée.

MUD
- Very muddy
A social outcast living on an island
meets a couple of young teenagers
that help him escape from the authorities.

LA CAGE DORÉE
- Portu funny
French comedy about the life of a couple of working
class portuguese immigrants that suddenly receive
an unexpected inheritance and are posed with the
dilemma of leaving or staying in France where they
have already settled.

ZERO DARK CITY
- Propaganda
Well-executed film about the tracking of Osama Ben Laden.
Smells like propaganda and lines are not clearly drawn between
fiction and fact. It's not a documentary and its not fiction, it is by
blurring those lines that the film looses it's conceptual strength.

QUARTET
- Elegant
Very elegant film directed by Dustin Hoffman
about a couple of famous opera singers that are
reunited in a retirement home for elderly musicians.

NO
- Very Political
Film featuring Gael García Bernal as the head of
marketing of the opposition in the referendum that
ousted Pinochet from power in the late 80's.

LOS AMANTES PASAJEROS
- Flying high
An airplane with mechanical problems creates
lots of funny situations between crew and
passengers on the flight.

THE GATEKEEPERS
- Very dangerous
Documentary featuring top intelligence agents from Israel's
secret service that explain the difficulties of their job and
insinuates that peace might be the only solution for Israel
and Palestine.

LINCOLN
- Epic
Master epic film by Steven Spielberg
about president Abraham Lincoln and
his struggle to pass the 13th amendment to
the US constitution where slavery was abolished.

SILVER LINING PLAYBOOK
- Another romantic comedy
Romantic comedy about two out of ordinary couple
who fall in love. He is a manic-depressive divorcee
and she is a nymphomaniac widow who fall in love.
Great acting by De Niro in a supporting role.

LA PARADE
- Funny
Comedy about a gay pride that turns to tragedy in
Belgrade that depicts the difficulties of minorities
in these parts of the world.

DJANGO UNCHAINED
- Masterpiece
Major masterpiece by Mr. Tarantino about a
black "cowboy" named Django who seeks to
save his wife from slavery.

TABU
- Poetic
Poetic photography in this black and white
Portuguese film directed by Miguel Gomes
about a passionate but illicit love affair in
Angola during the 1950's.

ARGO
- Entertaining propaganda
Film directed and featuring Ben Affleck as CIA
agent Tony Mendez and the escape from Iran
of six American hostages that were trapped
in the Canadian embassy during the hostage
crisis during the Carter years.

SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN
- Great story
Documentary about the incredible story of pop rock
musician Sixto Rodriguez and how he became a major
rock idol in South Africa in spite of being hardly known
in the US. His music is great and the documentary is
very well crafted, shot, directed and edited by Malik Bendjelloul.

BEWARE OF MR BAKER
- Bizarre subject
Smart documentary film about Ginger Baker the
drummer of Cream. The director shines by the
uncanny choice of his eccentric subject whose
bizarreness attracts sympathy.

A SEPARATION
- Sad
Iranian film about a married couple that
finally comes to terms with the fact that they
need to divorce.

LES SAVEURS DU PALAIS
- Very tasty film
This French film about president Francois Mitterrand’s
personal cook and her relation to the president shows
the importance of food in France. Food not only as a
hedonistic experience but also as an emotional experience
that is grounded in childhood memories.

LA PETITE VENISE
- Impossible romance
Italian film directed by Andrea Segre about a
Chinese immigrant woman who works on a textile
factory in the outskirts of Venice and an old
Venetian fisherman who fall in love in spite
of their cultural differences.

BEAUTIFUL CITY
- Excellent
Directed by Iranian filmmaker
Asgahar Farhadi. This movie about
a young boy who is sentenced to death
how  his sister and best friend try
to save him by seeking his pardon
surprises by its wittiness and sensibility.

MARLEY
-Predictable
This Marley documentary by Kevin
McDonald is very predictable and
does not shed any new light into Bob
Marley´s life.

THE DICTATOR
- Very Sacha
Another funny comedy by anglo jewish
comedian Sacha Cohen that parodies Mid
Eastern dictators. I just wonder when he is
going to do his first parody of Israelis.

TO ROME WITH LOVE
- Woody rocks in Rome
Another European based movie by Woody
Allen. This one located in Rome, consists of four
different stories that never intertwine. Great
acting by Roberto Begnini.

WOODY ALLEN: A DOCUMENTARY
- Inside Woody for a change
Chronological documentary about Woody Allen
from his childhood in Brooklyn to his latest films.
We manage to get a glimpse of his work
methods and character.

THE ANGEL'S SHARE
- Very Scottish
Comedy directed by Ken Loach about a group
of youngters in parole who adventure to steal a very
valuable bottle of Scotch whisky that was being sold on an auction.

STARBUCK
- Very funny
Canadian comedy about a man who suddenly
finds himself the father of more than 500 kids
thanks to sperm donations that he did during his youth.

JOURNAL DE FRANCE
- Very personal
Film by and about reknowned French photographer,
journalist and documentary film maker
Raymond Depardon. This documentary made
with his wife who is also his co-worker
centers on himself and his work by going
back and forward from his early work
as a war journalist in the 3rd world
to his latest photo work in rural France.

DE ROUILLE ET D’OS
- Great acting and directing
French drama film featured in the Cannes Festival
of 2012 directed by Jaques Audiard featuring
Marion Cotillard as a whale trainer
who loses her legs in an accident who eventually
gets involved with a boxer played by the Belgian
actor Matthias Schoenaerts. Once they hook
up this odd couple seem to work things out
for the best of both. He helps her recuperating
from her accident and she gives him emotional
stability.

THE CABIN IN THE WOODS
- Horribly funny
A sort of Wayne s world of horror movies this
conceptual horror-comedy film with B movie
esthetics surprises because it is smart and funny
at the same time.

PROMETHEUS
- Major scifi production
Entertaining scifi extravaganza directed by Ridley Scott
about a spaceship out to explore a distant planet
on the search for extraterrestrials supposed to be the
creators of life on earth.

MARGIN CALL
- Meet the evil bankers
Thriller about the starting moments of the financial
crisis of 2008. Great cast, great acting by Kevin Spacey
and Jeremy Irons as ruthless investment bankers
trying to save themselves from their greedy mistakes.
The movie seems to be based on the Lehman Brothers
collapse.

HOW MUCH DOES YOUR BUILDING WEIGH, MR FOSTER?
- Publicity documentary
Very predictable documentary about a
very predictable mainstream architect whose
corporate buildings surprise more
by their quantity and their size than
by their level of architectural poetry.
Too bad they did not make a film about James Stirling.

MOONRISE KINGDOM
- Lots of sensibility
Wes Anderson comedy about a couple of problematic
teenagers falling in love and their planned escape.
Great art direction and nice acting. Excellent.

DARK SHADOWS
- More funny horror
Directed by Tim Burton this film recreates the late sixties
ABC TV series features Johnny Depp as Bartabas the vampire.
As usual, Burton entertains with a well crafted film
centered on the right mix of comedy and horror in order
to obtain burlesque results .

CLOCLO
- Obsessive French singer
Commercial French movie about Claude Francois (Cloclo)
a French pop singer/composer who composed the song
My Way (Comme de habitude) later sung by Frank Sinatra.
Cloclo was very famous during the sixties and seventies in France.
The movie shows the complexities of his character.

OSLO, AUGUST 31st
- Dark and emotional
Excellent but very sad and grim movie
about a junkie who leaves his drug treatment in a
rehabilitation center and how he spends his
last day before committing suicide by a heroin overdose.

BULLHEAD
- Heavy duty
Belgian film that revolves around the mafia
for animal antibiotics and certain tragic stories
of people involved on this mafia.

EXTREMELY LOUD & INCREDIBLY CLOSE
- Calculated commercial
Commercial Anglo American movie featuring Tom Hanks
about the suffering of a kid who looses his father in 9-11 and
how he manages to deal with this loss.

TINKER TAYLOR SOLDIER SPY
- Old style thriller
Spy thriller featuring Gary Oldman that sends
us back to the cold war when the Berlin Wall
was still dividing the world in two halves.

LES INTOUCHABLES
- Funny and entertaining
Major commercial French film about
a paraplegic and his medical assistant who
comes from an immigrant minority and how
they establish a deep emotional bond and
friendship in spite of class, cultural and ethnical
differences.

TAKE SHELTER
- Nice
Suspense film about a man in his thirties living
on the country side with his wife and daughter
starts going whacko and getting paranoid ideas
about a huge end of the world storm coming his
way. Everything is going on his mind.

LE HAVRE
- Old fashioned contemporary
A child form Africa illegally disembarks
in Le Havre and is helped to get to England
by an old unemployed man.
Nice atmosphere on this film.

SHAME
- Feeling lonely and sexy
Movie about a sex maniac and his difficulties
in establishing a real relationship.

CARNAGE
- Theatrical
Two couples discuss a fight in school between
their sons and discover in the process
lots about themselves. Great acting by Cristoph Waltz.
Directed by Roman Polanski.

Mediocre documentary about the
internal mechanics of the

New York Times and about the
challenges it faces in the digital era.

about the life of a famous movie star that
gets wiped out when sound gets introduced

This film with a lot of back and forwards

- Smart and funny
Smart comedy featuring Paul Giamatti and
Dustin Hoffman about the life of Barney Panofsky
a TV producer.

DRIVE
- Visually sensible
A drifter whose profession is driving
stunts on films gets involved with the mafia.

RESTLESS
- Deeply melancholic and gay
Story about a terminally ill teenage girl
and her love story with a boy before
she dies. Very emotional film.
Directed by Gus van Sant this film.

MELANCHOLIA
- Blow your brains away
Lars Von Trier hits a big home run with this exoteric,
sci fi, deep emotional film about the end
of the world.

HABEMUS PAPAM
- Funny
Nanni Moretti's comedy speculates on a pope
that gets a panic attack once he is elected as
the new pope of the catholic church. He runs
away in panic, hides and finally resigns.

LA PIEL QUE HABITO
- Solid film making
Almodovar and Antonio Banderas
are back again together after many
years on this thriller about love,
hate, violence and death.

REVERÓN
- Different
Finally a decent film by Diego Risquez
about the life of Venezuelan painter
Armando Reverón.

TREE OF LIFE
- Spacey
Drama featuring Sean Penn and Brad Pit
as father and son who have a complex family
relationship.

MIDNIGHT IN PARIS
- Loved it
Woody finally makes it to Paris and produces
a haunted Film that elaborates on nostalgia
for the life of famous Angloamericans living
in Paris during the 20s.

Vick Muniz finds himself involved
with lots of trash in Brazil in order
to get some art done.

BLACK SWAN
- Great acting
Dark movie with great acting that gives
an insight into the world of professional ballet.

THE FIGHTER

Drugs and boxing mix in this drama about
two brothers in their pursuit of a boxing title.

King George VI of England seems to have had
speech problems that he finally surmounts.

TRUE GRIT
- Unexceptionally Coen Bros
Western saga about a little girl who sees her father shot
and looks for the best marshal in order to capture
the killers. Directed by the mythical Coen brothers.

HEREAFTER
- Not Clint s best
Drama film that centers on esoteric connections
between multinational characters centered around
a death after a tsunami in Asia. Directed by Clint Eastwood
but not one of his best films.

as a rich lady who has to step in to take

John Lennon s beginnings as a musician,
his complex relationship with his mother
and aunt as well as the beginning of the
Beatles are artfully portrayed in this film.

Documentary film that covers the making
of an issue of Vogue magazine seen from
management's point of view.

FUNNY PEOPLE
- Sandler pulls it off
Comedy featuring Adam Sandler
about a very successful comedian who falls
sick and this situation changes his general
views about life and friendship.

Sci fi movie about a man
stranded on a moon station.

TETRO
- Kind of boring
Black & white emotional drama directed by
Coppola. Great movie with excellent acting
and skillfully directed by maestro Coppola.

WHATEVER WORKS

Light comedy directed by Woody Allen
about a dysfunctional southern family who
gradually move to NYC to find their true identities.

AWAY WE GO
- Lost but finding their way
Road movie directed by Sam Mendes about a
mixed race couple searching a place to get established.

LE CONCERT
- Very funny
Franco-russian film about a very talented soviet
orchestra conductor who manages a big
comeback in Paris after his career is shattered
by the Soviet regime.

VINCERE
- Historically entertaining
Italian film about the lover of facist
dictator Benito Mussolini and how
she and her son were mistreated by the Duce.

AN EDUCATION
- GOOD
British film about a sixteen year old girl
who falls in love with an older man who
is not what he seems to be. Her career and
her ambitions to go to Oxford are endangered
because of this torrid affair.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND
- SO, SO
Directed by Tim Burton this Disney film about Alice going
back to Wonderland 10 years later as a young adult.
The plot of this film is nothing but an epic between good and evil,
the hero and the monster etc ....typical Hollywood stuff
with astonishing visual details by Burton. However, this film lacks
the spiritual profoundness of other Burton films.

PRECIOUS
- VERY GOOD
The story about a black teenager called Precious who was born
and raised in Harlem. She's bullied by her mother,
raped by her father, has eating disorders and two sons
by the age of sixteen. However, she manages to
surpass all obstacles in order start a life of her own.

INVUCTUS
- VERY GOOD
Film directed by Clint Eastwood about how Nelson
Mandela used rugby (a white man's sport) for
trying to weave interracial relations in South Africa
when he became president.

LEBANON
- GOOD
Israeli film about the invasion of Lebanon by
the Israeli army seen from inside a war tank that
goes astray. This film won the Berlin festival and
it is technically well achieved but lacks psychological force.

Korean film directed by Bong Joong-ho
about the relationship between
a mother and his only son and what
happens when the son is sent to jail for
an alleged murder.

GAINSBOURG - VIE HEROIQUE
- TRÈS VERY FRENCHY FILM
By now films about famous musicians have become a genre, a business
model that guarantees a sure investment. The Doors, Piaf, Ray Charles etc...
However this French film about the famous French singer/composer
Serge Gainsbourg goes a little further in the sense that it elegantly
mixes the real with the imaginary. The biographical recital centers
mostly around his parents, his women, his music....
Outstanding performance on the part of Eric Elmosnino
as maestro Gainsbourg.

A SERIOUS MAN
- IMPECCABLE
Funny and tragic film about a Jewish university professor during the sixties
whose life is suddenly turned upside down by a series of
unexpected events. Nice for a change to have a film about Jewish
people that does not deal with the II world war.

MY WINNIPEG
- BIZARRE IN A GOOD WAY.
Bizarre documentary about the Canadian city of Winnipeg where Guy Maddin
the writer-director is originally from. Blend of memories, dreams
and hallucinations abound in this ghostly film where the real
interweaves with the imaginary and the director's personal history blends
with the history of the city.

LA TERRE DE LA FOLIE
- DIFFERENT
Independent documentary (if a movie financed by
French government can be called independent) made
by Luc Moullet who tries to trace the origins of madness through
various crimes committed in the Alpes Maritimes Region during the
last century.

IN THE LOOP
- FUNNY
British comedy that parodies politicians and the
way that decisions are made behind closed doors.
The movie revolves around a weak British minister
and how he is used in order to start a war.

AVATAR
- SEE IT IN A BIG THEATER
Special effects and amazing animation abound in this grandiose sci fi
saga à la Hollywood style about the encounter of humans
and extraterrestrial beings in a far away planet called Pandora.
This movie makes you think about the occupation of the American
continent by Europeans and how native Americans where
either killed or obliged to run from their habitat for the benefit
of the new European immigrant invaders.

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE
- TOUCHING
Directed by Spike Jonez this film is based on
an adaptation of a children's story written by Maurice
Sendak about a child who escapes from his house
and travels to a far away island which is inhabited by
weird monsters. Very emotional film but definitely
not a movie for kids but for adults with fluent imaginations.

THE ROAD
- OK
A father and his young son wonder around
in a chaotic post-apocalyptic world trying to save
themselves from hunger and violent thugs. Despite
actor Viggo Mortensen and good photography this film
doesn't manage to build a thick psychological atmosphere.

LOS ABRAZOS ROTOS
- ALMODOVAR REPEATS ALMODOVAR
Spanish film directed and produced by Pedro Almodovar
about a blind writer who falls in love with the lover of
a very rich and powerful businessman. Like most films by
this outstanding director this picture features a right mix of
sex, crime and intrigue.

INGLORIOUS BASTERDS
- GOOD
Film that parodies II WW films. Directed by Quentin Tarantino this movie
features Brad Pitt as the commander of a brigade of Jews who hunt and kill
German soldiers during the II World War. Even if this film has lots of
nice scenes and details its definitely not Tarantino's best film. Excellent acting by
Cristoph Waltz the Austrian actor who plays the bad guy .

DISTRICT 9
- GOOD
South African sci-fi film about a huge spaceships
that parks itself above Johannesburg. Aliens get sent to
a compound until one of them eventually manages to escape
with the help of a human.

PONYO
- GREAT
Japanese romantic animation film by Miyasaki
about a magical sea creature that falls in love with
a little kid who is the son of a fisherman. Excellent !!!

TETRO
- GOOD
Black & White emotional drama directed by Coppola.
Great movie with excellent acting and skillfully
directed by maestro Coppola.

HURT LOCKER
- VERY GOOD
Well produced Iraq war movie, probably financed in part
by the US army, about a bomb squad in charge of
dismantling bombs in Iraq.

FUNNY PEOPLE
-GOOD
Comedy featuring Adam Sandler about a
very successful comedian who falls sick and how
this situation changes his general views about life
and friendship.

JULIE JULIA
- OK
Featuring Meryl Streep as Julia Child this
movie goes back and forward between Child's
attempt to publish her first book and a blogger in
NYC who decides to cook through the recipe book in a year.
Too bad that the actress who plays the blogger part is
not up to the task up facing to Streep's performance.

WHAT EVER WORKS
- GOOD
Light comedy directed by Woody Allen about a
dysfunctional family from the South of the U.S. who gradually
move to NYC to find their true identities.

AWAY WE GO
- GOOD
Road movie directed by Sam Mendes about
a mixed race couple searching a place to get established.

ROMAN DE GARE
- OK
French commercial suspense film about a very
successful female novelist who doesn't write her own
books and suddenly has to face with the real writer of her novels.
Crime, sex and suspense are the three axis of this light "sympa"
commercial film.

LE SCAPHANDRE ET LE PAPILLON
- EXCELLENT
Based on a true story about the last year of a magazine
director who is totally paralyzed after a stroke. Directed by visual artist
Julian Schanbel. It's nice to see some on the big screen some of the force
and bravado of contemporary visual artists.

MILK
- OK
Pro-gay politically oriented film featuring Sean Penn as a
gay activist based in San Francisco in the late seventies.
It is clear that this is a politically oriented film that tries,
behind a well crafted film, to impose a pro-homosexual opinion matrix
in times when gay marriage is a hot political issue in Anglo-America.

HE'S JUST NOT INTO YOU
- BAD
It is incredible that this film about women in search for
the love of their lives is so bad considering how many
big name Hollywood actors appear in the cast.

SMART PEOPLE
- BAD
This film about a middle age widower who
is an university professor who has not gotten
over the death of his long gone wife fails in its purpose
to be a "cool independent indyfilm ambiance" film.

THE PAINTED VEIL
- OK
Based on a novel by Sommerset Maughmam about a
British medical doctor who fights a cholera outbreak in a small
Chinese village, while also being trapped at home in a loveless
marriage to an unfaithful wife.

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE
- OK
Oscar winning Indian romantic film about the lives
of two brothers and a girl who are raised in the slums of India.

GRAN TORINO
- EXCELLENT
Directed and acted by Clint Eastwood who plays
a retired war veteran who eventually gets involved with his
Vietnamese neighbors.

DARK CITY
- EXCELLENT
Dark sci fi film directed by Alex Proyas and featuring William Hurt
as a policeman who investigates a series of murders in a futuristic
city where the sun never shines.

LES PLAGES DE AGNES
- GOOD
Autobiographical documentary of the life of well renowned French
director Agnes Varda. Her friends, her lovers, her films, her sons all
bundled together in an "très sympathique" manner.

Z32
- GOOD
Directed by Avi Mograbi this Israeli documentary seeks to uncover the
thoughts and feelings of an Israeli soldier who participated in an undercover
military operation that resulted in the death of Palestinian soldiers.

THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON
- GOOD
A man whose life goes backward, he is born old and
dies young. Well crafted and acted commercial Hollywood film.

REVOLUTIONARY ROAD
- EXCELLENT
Featuring Di Caprio, this film skillfully directed by
Sam Mendes dwells on the inhumanity of the lives of sensible
people condemned to lives in the "perfect" suburbs of Anglo-America.

CHANGELING
-EXCELLENT
Directed by Clint Eastwood and featuring Angelina Jolie
this movie is inspired in real events that occurred during the 20's in L.A.
when a single mother lost her young son and had to go against a corrupted
police department in order to find out what really happened to her son.

BURN AFTER READING
- OK
Comedy about a mix up that involves the CIA with regular
guys trying to make a fast buck through a blackmail scheme.
Probably no the best film directed by the Oscar winning Cohen brothers.
Features good acting on the part of George Clooney.

CARAMEL
- OK
Lebanese film about the daily lives and sentimental
imbroglios of five women who work as hairdressers in Lebanon.

QUATRE NUITS AVEC ANNA
- VERY GOOD
Polish film about a voyeur who
falls in love with a nurse that lives
in front of his house in a small
town in Poland.

TWO LOVERS
- GOOD
This movie features Joaquin Phoenix
as a bipolar Jew who lives in Brooklyn
with his family who owns a laundry shop.
He eventually gets involved with two girls,
a wacky neighbor and a conservative
Jewish girl who is the perfect match for him.

LA VIE MODERNE
- GOOD
The director follows the life of farmers
living deep in the country side of France.
The film seeks to catch their everyday
life, their fears and hopes. Good photography
by non other than Raymond Depardon.

HUNGER
- EXCELLENT
Movie directed by afro-British avant garde video artist Steve McQueen
about IRA's Bobby Sand's last days in prison until he dies in a hunger
strike against the brutal abuses of her majesty's security forces.
What's interesting about this film is the crossover of a visual artists
into the field of narrative cinema. Lets hope other visual
artists follow his example of exploring the boundaries between
visual arts and main stream cinema.

LOS BORGIA
- GOOD
Spanish- Italian Hollywood-like
production about the historic Borgia family
who intended to make an unified kingdom
in Italy while one of the family was
pope during the XV century.

ELSA Y FRED
- GOOD
Spanish-agrentinian romantic comedy about an
old couple that falls in love.
Great acting by China Zorilla.

TROPIC THUNDER
- GOOD
Comedy that parodies Hollywood war movies.
Great acting by Downey Jr and Tom Cruise.

COWBOY ANGEL
- GOOD
French road movie about a ten year old kid who goes to Spain
to find his dad with an adult friend who happens to be a Parisian hood.
They never find his dad so they continue on the road eventually
developing a solid friendship.

CITRONNIERS (ETZ LIMON)
- VERY GOOD
Film based on the true story of a Palestinian widow
who defends her small lemon tree plantation when an
Israeli minister moves next to her house and wants to have all
